Catalyse

Volunteer for PauseAI

Catalyse is the volunteer platform for PauseAI. It allows anyone to join projects or complete tasks that help advance our mission. You can also propose your own projects to get help from other volunteers on things that you want to work on.

Who we are

PauseAI is a civic movement, which means that we help citizens organise to take collective actions and make their voice heard. Our volunteers engage with their elected representatives about AI safety, march in protests, join conferences about AI safety and gather signatures for open letters.

PauseAI is focused on the risks of superhuman AI. This focus is the thing that is unique about PauseAI and distinguishes us from other movements.

Where that work has led

  • Open Letter to Demis Hassabis — August 2025

We published an open letter signed by over 60 UK politicians, in response to Google DeepMind failing to uphold its AI safety commitments. Several of the MPs who signed later spoke in the Westminster Hall debate that we helped to organise in December.

  • Westminster Hall Debate — December 2025

We proposed and helped to organise a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament on AI Safety. We wrote a memo which was sent out to all MPs prior to the debate and also helped to draft some proposition speeches, putting us in a strong position to work with those MPs when proposing amendments to the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill.

  • March for AI Safety — February 2026

We co-organised a march past the offices of OpenAI and Big Tech companies in King's Cross, London. It was the largest ever protest focused exclusively on the risks of AI, with around 300 people marching and media coverage in MIT Technology Review, The Independent, The Wall Street Journal and others.

How Catalyse works

  1. Step 1: Apply

Tell us about your interest in PauseAI, what you’re good at and how much time you have.

  2. Step 2: Get matched

Once you’re approved you can view open projects. Projects that match your skills or location are highlighted.

  3. Step 3: Contribute

Start working on something useful to make AI safer! You can also propose your project, if you have an idea you’re excited to work on with other volunteers.

Before you apply

  • Applications are reviewed by one of the PauseAI paid staff, so there is a short wait before you can access the full site. We will email you either way.
  • There is no minimum commitment. Just an hour here and there can go a long way.
